The Department of Neurology offers electives in neuromuscular disorders, a neurology sub-internship, critical care, and research.
This elective provides experience in neuromuscular disorders, including participation in specialty neuromuscular clinics — dealing with a variety of acquired and inherited disorders — and exposure to basic and advanced electrodiagnostic procedures, muscle and nerve pathology, skin biopsy and autonomic testing.
Prerequisites include successful completion of first- and second-year curriculum, and successful completion of the third-year neurology core rotation. At least one USMLE score must be available.

This elective is designed to give the student increased exposure and autonomy in care of the neurology patient. It also gives the student additional experience and increases his or her knowledge of neurological disorders.
Prerequisites include successful completion of first- and second-year curriculum as well as successful completion of the third-year neurology core rotation. This course does not accept international students.

This elective is designed to give the student increased exposure and autonomy in neurocritical care, including medical treatment in acute neurological patients. Students function as sub-interns, becoming integral members of the neuro-intensive care unit team under supervision of several primary caregivers.
Prerequisites include successful completion of first- and second-year curriculum as well as successful completion of the third-year neurology core rotation.

This course provides an opportunity for medical students to participate in research programs within the Department of Neurology. Individual faculty members sponsor and supervise research projects jointly developed by the individual student and a faculty member. Credit and duration of each project is variable, based on the amount of time the student devotes to the project.
This course is available to UC Irvine students only and requires the advance approval of the associate dean of Clinical Education.
