How breakthrough research on brain waves can help memory disorders and defy our most critical health challenges
Please join us for a fascinating lecture on the latest cutting-edge neuroscience research at UCI School of Medicine with great potential for the development of therapies for memory disorders related to post-traumatic stress disorder, as well as for improved outcomes for resuscitation in cases of coma and cardiac arrest.
Jack Lin, MD, Director of the UCI Health Epilepsy Program, and Yama Akbari, MD, PhD, Neurocritical Care physician and researcher, together detail some of the breakthrough innovations from their cutting-edge research.
The inaugural Roneet Carmell Memorial Lecture has been established in 2019 to honor the memory of Roneet Kimeldorf Carmell, a community leader, wife and mother, who left this world too soon to cardiac arrest. The lecture will be held at the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Center, followed by a reception.

Dr. Tahseen Mozaffar, Interim Chair of Neurology, will welcome guests.
Gary Carmell will introduce the Carmell Family and the story of the Inaugural Roneet Carmell Memorial Lecture.
6 p.m. — Research in epilepsy transforming treatments for memory disorders - a story of altruism
Jack Lin, MD is Professor of Neurology and Biomedical Engineering, and director of the UCI Comprehensive Epilepsy Program. He uses advanced technologies to diagnose and treat drug-resistant epilepsy, and is internationally renowned for expertise in neurophysiological analysis of memory, emotional processing and sleep, using intracranial EEG and single neuron recordings in humans. His innovative research is funded by the NIH Brain Initiative, and published in top journals worldwide.
6:25 p.m. — A critical role for brain waves during cardiac arrest, consciousness and coma
Yama Akbari, MD, PhD, is an Assistant Professor of Neurology and Neurological Surgery at UCI Health. He is a is a neurologist, neuro-intensivist, and neuroscientist, who splits his time between clinical duties taking care of patients in the Neuro-Intensive Care Unit (Neuro-ICU) at UCI Medical Center and running a basic science/translational research lab focused on consciousness, coma, and cardiac arrest/resuscitation.
