Department of Neurology

Welcome to the UC Irvine Department of Neurology Web site. Our department is among the most dynamic academic neurology departments in the country.

Our goals are to provide outstanding healthcare to patients with diverse neurological disorders while training highly competent clinical neurologists. We do this with a curriculum that emphasizes both inpatient and outpatient neurology, taking advantage of the broad expertise of our faculty. The clinical activities of the neurology department are distributed across the UC Irvine Medical Center, the UC Irvine campus and our major affiliated hospital, the Long Beach Veterans’ Affairs Medical Center. We enthusiastically await the opening in early 2009 of a new state-of-the-art university hospital, which will house additional beds for patients with neurological disorders.

Among our most recent accomplishments: we are proud to have the first academic stroke center on the West Coast to be certified by the Joint Commission, the MDA-UC Irvine ALS Neuromuscular Center is among the best in Southern California, we have partnered with other departments to establish multidisciplinary programs in stroke, epilepsy, movement disorders and neuro-oncology. Basic and clinical research in the neurosciences are particularly strong at UC Irvine. For the past few years the department has been ranked among the top neurology departments in the country by the National Institutes of Health. Areas of active research include devising methods to predict and improve functional recovery after stroke, mapping white matter tracts in epilepsy, seeking ways to promote healthy brain aging and novel treatments for Alzheimer’s disease and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, understanding the pathophysiology of multiple sclerosis, delineating novel molecular and cellular mechanisms of neurodegeneration and developing stem cell therapies for neurological disorders.

Although there has been tremendous progress in the past decade, considerable work remains to be done in order to fully comprehend, treat and eventually cure many neurological diseases. The UC Irvine neurology department is proud to contribute to this endeavor by virtue of an uncompromising commitment to excellence in clinical, educational, and research pursuits.
